Prof. Baran studies neuron development, including microtubule-based mechanisms that underlie axon outgrowth and synapse formation.

Prof. Macabenta's research focuses on understanding the mechanisms underlying collective cell behavior leading up to organogenesis.

Prof. McCormack studies bird evolution and the effects of landscape and climate change on biodiversity.

Prof. North investigates how plants cope with stressful environments such as hot deserts, dry shrub lands, tropical tree canopies, and fire-prone landscapes, with a primary focus on how plants cope with limited water.

Prof. Okumura studies interactions between bacterial pathogens and human immune cells at the cellular level.

Prof. Pivovaroff uses plant eco-physiology techniques to understand how forests respond to global change.

Trained as an ichthyologist, Prof. Pondella's major research focus is the rocky reefs and kelp beds in the Southern California Bight where he works on a number of programs including marine protected areas, fisheries, artificial reef technology and subtidal restoration.

Prof. Rodriguez’s research focuses on the molecular mechanisms underlying human disease.

Prof. Schulz studies the biology of cone snails, venomous marine gastropods whose peptide neurotoxins are highly selective modulators of ion channels and cell surface receptors.

I am a marine ecologist interested in how species interactions and communities respond to climate change and other human-induced stressors; as part of this work, I have focused on coral reef, seagrass, and oyster reef ecosystems across the U.S. and Caribbean.

Professor Thompson’s research explores the causes and potential treatments for neurological diseases such as epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease. This includes histology, pharmacology, genetic engineering, and transplantation.  We use models that have included a combination of in vivo and in vitro techniques. Currently we are focused on stem cell fusion, and the use of optogenetics.

Amanda Zellmer’s research focuses on the utility and development of computational methods for studying spatial ecological and evolutionary processes, particularly in the context of conservation biology.
