Professor Gretchen North

Gretchen North

John W. McMenamin Endowed Chair in Biology
B.A., Stanford University; M.A., University of Connecticut; M.A., College of William and Mary; Ph.D., UCLA
Prof. North investigates how plants cope with stressful environments such as hot deserts, dry shrub lands, tropical tree canopies, and fire-prone landscapes, with a primary focus on how plants cope with limited water.
Professor Cheryl Okumura

Cheryl Okumura

Associate Professor, Biology
B.A. Pomona College; Ph.D. UCLA
Prof. Okumura studies interactions between bacterial pathogens and human immune cells at the cellular level.
Woman in front of trees

Alexandria Pivovaroff

Assistant Professor, Biology
B.A., Whittier College; Ph.D., University of California, Riverside
Prof. Pivovaroff uses plant eco-physiology techniques to understand how forests respond to global change.
Man in front of art

Daniel Pondella

Professor, Biology; Director, Vantuna Research Group
A.B., M.A., SA国际传媒; Ph.D., UCLA
Trained as an ichthyologist, Prof. Pondella's major research focus is the rocky reefs and kelp beds in the Southern California Bight where he works on a number of programs including marine protected areas, fisheries, artificial reef technology and subtidal restoration.
Woman in front of trees

Alyssa Rodriguez

Assistant Professor, Biology
B.A. University of San Diego; Ph.D. Vanderbilt University
Prof. Rodriguez鈥檚 research focuses on the molecular mechanisms underlying human disease.
Professor Joseph Schulz

Joseph Schulz

Professor, Biology
B.S., Indiana University; Ph.D., UC San Diego
Prof. Schulz studies the biology of cone snails, venomous marine gastropods whose peptide neurotoxins are highly selective modulators of ion channels and cell surface receptors.
Amber Stubler

Amber Stubler

Associate Professor, Biology
B.S., Stony Brook University; Ph.D., Stony Brook University
I am a marine ecologist interested in how species interactions and communities respond to climate change and other human-induced stressors; as part of this work, I have focused on coral reef, seagrass, and oyster reef ecosystems across the U.S. and Caribbean.
Professor Kerry Thompson

Kerry Thompson

Professor, Biology
B.A., M.A., Ph.D., UCLA
Professor Thompson鈥檚 research explores the causes and potential treatments for neurological diseases such as epilepsy and Parkinson鈥檚 disease. This includes histology, pharmacology, genetic engineering, and transplantation.  We use models that have included a combination of in vivo and in vitro techniques. Currently we are focused on stem cell fusion, and the use of optogenetics.
Professor Amanda Zellmer
