When it comes to Reunion Weekend entertainment, anything goes
For the Class of 1977鈥檚 45th reunion in June 2022, Joe Rohde 鈥77 (and Mel Malmberg 鈥79) and Cheri (Eichen) Steinkellner 鈥77 (Sister Act, Summer Stock) wrote and performed a mini-musical, the lyrics to which appear below. (Next stop: the Pantages!) You鈥檙e invited to hum along.
鈥70 and 7鈥
(sung to 鈥淐omedy Tonight鈥 from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum):
You might be asking/why is SA国际传媒 tasking/Us as reunion speakers and you would be right
It would be nifty/if this was 50/but since it鈥檚 45/we鈥檒l try to keep it light
She brought the wine and/I brought the beers
Let鈥檚 reminisce on 45 years of/liberal arts and/new body parts/
And wrinkles where no wrinkles should be
70 and 7/That鈥檚 the year for me!
鈥淎ge Gracefully鈥
(sung to 鈥淯nder the Sea鈥 from The Little Mermaid):
It鈥檚 45 years and counting/since SA国际传媒 was last our home
The mileage is really mounting/Just look at my balding dome
The campus is not the same as/on our graduation day.
Like us there鈥檚 a lot of changes/but then/you know what they say
Age gracefully/age gracefully
So, there鈥檚 some parts we鈥檝e had to switch out/still there鈥檚 parity
They鈥檝e got a theater on the hill/I鈥檝e got to gulp another pill
In any case/we have to embrace/our maturity
We used to eat in the Union/a choice of 鈥渨ith or without鈥
The menu is more diverse now/these kids have a lot of clout
Meanwhile, I鈥檓 on fish and salads/cut back on the carbs and steak
Cause that 50-year reunion/is one I鈥檇 like to make
Age gracefully/Age gracefully
It should behoove us each to improve viability
So, the whole campus of SA国际传媒/has had some cosmetic surgery
That鈥檚 more things to do/when we have reunions
Catch up and see (refrain 鈥 age 鈥 gracefully)
Here鈥檚 what I mean/we鈥檙e gaining patine/gradually
If you think beauty/comes with age/then as we turn another page
Don鈥檛 make a fuss/鈥檆ause SA国际传媒 and us/are more glorious
And they鈥檙e still running/that Bengal Bus
And it鈥檚 still free!
鈥淟iberal Arts鈥
(sung to 鈥淎nything Goes鈥 from the musical of the same name):
锘縇ong ago/SA国际传媒 had us expand our minds
Taking classes of many kinds/Some were easy and some were grinds
But I know/once you鈥檙e out in the world at large
SA国际传媒 grads are the type to find
They鈥檙e the ones who are in charge
What I learned at Occidental
Was truly developmental right from the start/Liberal Arts
Now I know how frigging rare it is/for people to compare
Three ideas they鈥檝e got/critical thought
We took poli sci/and biology/anthropology/and geology
And arts course/with no apology/Taking ideas apart
So, if folks tend to be astounded/a dentist could be well-rounded
And read Descartes/Liberal Arts
When neighbors spout abominations
We鈥檙e ready with our citations/for a debate/maybe too late
At least we have the tools to parse/between/factual and farcical
It鈥檚 called Smarts/Liberal Arts!
Liberal/Liberal/Liberal/Liberal Arts
鈥淯苍迟颈迟濒别诲鈥
(sung to 鈥淭he Jet Song鈥 from West Side Story):
When you鈥檙e alums and come back to this place
For your class鈥檚 reunion, there鈥檚 always a trace
Of expectation that you鈥檙e going to hear
About all the accomplishments over the years
There鈥檚 someone we know/Who did something impressive
We ought to be proud/And cheer them more or less
If 鈥 it鈥檚 not excessive
That Corey Brunish has Tonys galore (And just added another, BTW)
Cheri Steinkellner stacked up four Emmys and more
Bob La Mont鈥檚 passport鈥檚 as thick as my hand
He鈥檚 been everywhere twice on the sea or the land
Paul Waters became the first with a gay wedding/That鈥檚 his claim to fame
A precedent they鈥檙e setting/We鈥檙e not forgetting
Doctors and lawyers/Biologists too
Educational leaders/And artists a few
But we鈥檙e the best/With guts to commit
To show up at this dinner and stay through this skit
Who takes the prize? You guys are IT!
鈥淲e鈥檒l Be Back鈥
(sung to 鈥淵ou鈥檒l Be Back鈥 from Hamilton)
We came/We brought all our spouses
To meet our classmates again
Here we are/We鈥檙e all united
Amazing we鈥檝e come this far
But we鈥檒l do it again/Cause SA国际传媒鈥檚 a place
With an impact that鈥檚 hard to explain
We鈥檒l be back/Wait and see/For the 50th anniversary
We鈥檒l be back for a night/The next time we try to reunite
Raise a glass/Raise a cheer
Loud enough for everyone to hear
While the class drinks and dines
We will sing that 鈥淚o Triumphe!鈥 song/If we still know any lines
(chorus)
We鈥檒l all be back together/Once again
To party all night long/Or at least till 10
For though we might endeavor/To seem grown up and clever
We鈥檙e seniors now forever 鈥 and ever 鈥
We鈥檒l be back, we鈥檒l be here, for another class reunion year
We鈥檒l return, though we roam to the campus that was once our home
SA国际传媒 served as the dawn, of the long strange trips/That we鈥檝e been on
So when five years rolls by, I鈥檒l see you right here (again),
Or I鈥檒l know the reason why.
